Segregation and Strategic Neighborhood Interaction

چکیده
We introduce non-type based, social interaction preferences into a Schelling model of residential choice. These social interactions take the form of a Prisoner’s Dilemma played with neighbors in the Schelling model. We begin by studying two models independently. We study the Schelling model over a wide range of utility functions and then proceed to study a spatial Prisoner’s Dilemma model. These models provide a benchmark for studying a combined model with preferences over like-typed neighbors and payoffs in a spatial Prisoner’s Dilemma. We study this combined model both analytically and using agent-based simulations. We find that the presence of these additional social interactions may increase or decrease segregation compared to the standard Schelling model. If the non-type based social interactions result in cooperation then segregation is reduced. On the other hand, if the non-type based social interactions result in defection, then segregation is increased.

Surveying the Spatial Justice and planning theories with emphasis on Iran’s conditions
Segregation has been widely discussed by social scientists and especially by urban geographers and planners over the past decades. However, regardless of their focus, most of these studies view segregation as an obvious case of spatial injustice. I argue that this implicit relationship between segregation, (in) justice, and space needs to be reexamined. This paper approaches this task by review...

متن کاملMetropolitan-level racial residential segregation and black-white disparities in hypertension.
Few studies have examined geographic variation in hypertension disparities, but studies of other health outcomes indicate that racial residential segregation may help to explain these variations. The authors used data from 8,071 black and white participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2006) who were aged 25 years or older to investigate whether black-white hype...
متن کاملInvited commentary: residential segregation and health--the complexity of modeling separate social contexts.
When researching racial disparities in health, residential segregation cannot be ignored. Because of segregation, contextual differences by race are so pronounced that ignoring them may lead to mis-estimating the effect of individual-level factors. However, given the stark racial separation of social contexts, researching how residential segregation and neighborhood inequality contribute to rac...
